This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
