Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters approached the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the location and another man who escaped following the blast was located soon after. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area showed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the residence was subject to an court order due to debts accrued by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the explosion had happened on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he said officers had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to local news, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
