Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say early analysis show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A senior representative commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and had to be addressed promptly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
